SEASON 8 SERIES 10 HIGHLIGHTS
Facing a new AL East division leader in power-hitting Connecticut, HB shuffled some players in the lineup to spark the offense in this "short" 4 game set.
Game 1
Dave McNally and Clark Griffith dueled in a see-saw battle that saw HBB lead 1-0 in the 3rd, CNY led 3-1 in the 4th on a Piazza Baltimore special, then HBB led 4-3 in the 5th. A 4-4 tie in the 6th was unknotted when Sam Thompson walked for HB, stole 2nd, was WP to third and scampered home on an Oyster Burns SF. Yanks reliever Shields helped the Blue Wave pad it in the 8th by giving up Gaavy Cravath's second blast of the game and Roger Connor's pinch hit pile driver shot to right. Clark Griffith survived to toss his 9th complete game of the year.
CNY: 4r 5h 1e
HBB: 8r 10h 0e
W- Griffith (9-1); L- McNally (3-1)
HR- Piazza (6); Mantle (9); Cravath 2 (7); Connor (3)
Game 2
Another great match-up with Roger Clemens squaring off with Juan Marichal. Clemens befuddled BlueWave bats for 6 innings, allowing only 3 hits and his only mistake being a 2-run shot by Connor in the 3rd. A Mantle tape-measure blast highlighted the Yanks 3 runs. That 3-2 Yankee lead held as the bevy of tough CNY relievers paraded out and shut HB down for 2 2/3 more: Gagne, Valverde & Hoffman. But Trevor never got over his meltdown blown save to the Rockies that started his team's slide out of the playoff race. He came on with one on in the 9th, got 1 out but gave up a walk. Jackie Robinson and Dan Brouthers then pulled off a daring double steal, but pinch hitter Joe Jackson popped out to third. With two down in the 9th, BlueWave manager namesake George Brett drilled a line shot off the right field wall to plate 2 runs in the walk-off win. Thriller!
CNY: 3r 5h 1e
HBB: 4r 4h 1e
W- Marichal (8-3); L- Hoffman (0-2)
HR- Mantle (10); Conor (4)
Game 3
What a great series. Tight again as HB held a 1-0 lead into the 5th behind Lefty Gomez. Honus Wagner then booted a ball at short which led to 2 unearned runs. Hampton and the bullpen held it down this time, with Matt Williams tacking on an insurance tater in the 8th. Gomez finished the complete game loss, surrendering only 1 earned run.
CNY: 3r 6h 0e
HBB: 1r 6h 1e
W- Hampton (5-3); L- Gomez (6-4)
HR- M. Williams (12)
Game 4
Another close battle, but this one had some offensive fireworks with early showers for both Short (2 2/3 IP) and Grove (4 IP) who each gave up 5 runs. Mantle's 3rd inning 3-run shot put CNY up 4-1, but HBB rallied in the bottom of the frame for 4 to go up 5-4. The Yanks tied it in the 4th on a Soriano groundout, and then in the 5th Bernie Williams comes home for the 6-5 lead when Matt Williams grounds into a double play. But in the bottom of the 5th Brett triples in Cravath to knot it at 6-6. In the 6th Wagner singles but is gunned down by I-Rod for the 2nd out when he tries to swipe second base. Cocky Collins follows with his own single but is successful in his theft of second, and comes home as King Kelly smashes a double to left-center off of reliever Randy Myers. Kevin Brown makes that stand up in relief as he shuts them down for the last 4 innings.
CNY: 6r 9h 1e
HBB: 7r 10h 2e
W- K. Brown (3-2); L- R. Myers
HR- Mantle (11)
A thrilling series as usual between these two teams, HB was lucky to keep most of the Yanks Yacks in the park.
